WW2 RAF B-type flying helmet & MKIV goggle plates - Maker "B.Sterling & Co" - Sz.1 - 1939. A good example of the iconic B-type helmet as used and worn by aircrew and pilots during the early years of WW2, throughout the Battle of France and Britain period. This example also has the addition of the guide plates for the MKIV series of flying goggles, a rare and nice modification to find.

Not a bad example of this modified B-type helmet. The exterior leather is in pretty good condition; there is minimal loss to the brown finish. With no holes, tears, or major damage to the leather, as we can see. The chinstrap and buckle again work without issues, as is the rear adjustment strap.

The guide plates are in nice worn condition, still retaining a fair amount of their painted finish. The guide plates also have both of the little press-stud guides that press onto the plates themselves. Often found missing from these types of modified B-type helmets.

Both zip-ears are in good condtion, with no damage to the leather. The one on the right-hand side is also marked with a large A.M. crown stamp, and stores number 22C/66 embossed. Inside, the zip ears have original sponges and rubber earphone holders in place.

Moving inside, the chamois lining is somewhat soiled from use; sadly, both ear doughnuts are also missing and have been removed at some point. The helmet still has its original manufacturer label, indicating it was made by "B.Sterling & Co Ltd", dated 1939 and marked as a size 1. We estimate the size to be around a size 55 UK hat size. Finally, the helmet is named to what looks like "D.WATSON". We have not managed to research this name, so there is scope for the new owner to try and find some history!

Overall, a very displayable B-type helmet with the rare MKIV goggles modification. It would still display very nicely with a pair of goggles and a D-type oxygen mask! A lovely piece for any WW2 RAF collection, museum, or display!
