WW2 RAF MKVA FLYING SPECTACLES. A good cased set of the rare MKVA flying spectacles, as used and developed for Coastal Command aircew. They were designed to reduce haze when flying over water and help with spotting surface vessels.
The spectacles themselves are of a thin brass framework construction, in good condition. There is no damage to the frames or hinges. Both lenses have suffered some delamination, but are somewhat clear. The 2 Perspex side screens are again without issue and undamaged. Fitted to the spectacles is a flip-down sunscreen, it has a slight warp to it but is otherwise in good, clear condition and moves freely. The spectacles come with a set of 3 plates, one forehead hook, and 2 side press stud plates. These would have been fitted to the wearer's flying helmet, allowing the goggles to be fitted to their helmet. These are in excellent condition, still in their small paper bag.
The strap is again in great condition, with some paint loss to the brass fittings, and nicely marked on the strap, "A.M. MARK VA 22C/156 NEWBOLD & CO LIMITED". These details are also found on the leather storage case. The leather case is also similarly marked on the top flap, in good condition, with no issues to report.
The spectacles also come with an accessories wallet, which has an extra set of tinted lenses, unfortunately somewhat damaged now, and would have had a tin of Everclear de-misting paste, sadly now missing. There also would have been a small screwdriver for changing the lenses, as is often the case; this is now missing as well.
The spectacle set comes with the original information and instruction booklet, a very nice booklet with lovely images and graphics. In excellent condition, fully legible without damage. Also included in this set is an extract from the 1275 Air Publication, specifically the section on the MK.VA spectacles, chapter 12, section 1. Again, a small pamphlet with description, instructions and diagrams for changing the lens, general care and cleaning, etc. We've never seen this before, but it does clearly say at the top that a copy must be kept within the spectacles case.
Overall, a lovely set of these rare flying spectacles, ideal for any RAF museum, display or collection.
